Short summary
Princess Shiori made a deathbed promise to return the dragon's pearl to its rightful owner, but keeping that promise is more dangerous than she ever imagined.
She must journey to the kingdom of dragons, navigate political intrigue among humans and dragons alike, fend off thieves who covet the pearl for themselves and will go to any lengths to get it, all while cultivating the appearance of a perfect princess to dissuade those who would see her burned at the stake for the magic that runs in her blood.
The pearl itself is no ordinary cargo; it thrums with malevolent power, jumping to Shiori's aid one minute, and betraying her the next—threatening to shatter her family and sever the thread of fate that binds her to her true love, Takkan. It will take every ounce of strength Shiori can muster to defend the life and the love she's fought so hard to win.
My review
In "The Dragon's Promise," we dive again in the enchanting world of Kiata and follow Shiori when she continues her quest. It is an adventure packed with action, hope, love, and family. Can Shiori return the pearl to the rightful owner and save her kingdom from the demons?
Although it has been a while since I've read "Six Crimson Cranes," I had no difficulties following this sequel. Starting from the first chapters, the story is easily the follow and, where necessary, things are explained again. Due to the clear writing style of Elizabeth Lim, I flew through the chapters in no time and found myself wandering in the magical realm of dragons. I loved how detailed the world was described. It really made me want to travel to Kiata! All myths and legends passing in the story, make it even more enchanting.
Throughout the story, there are lots of action-packed moments, so it never gets boring. There are battles with dragons, demons, and even citizens. Although the book can be tensive, it is not overpowering the story. In between, there is some time for heartwarming events with Shiori's family and her betrothed, Kattan. I enjoyed these moments so much, they really make the story shine! I also liked that the characters seem to communicate clearly with each other, so there is no room for miscommunication. I found myself giggling and blushing when reading, and it has been a long time since a book could make me do that.
To be honest, the ending made me definitely cry, but it was beautiful although unexpected. I wouldn't want to change anything about this book! I'm bit sad I finished this duology now, but I'm sure going to reread it one day. Luckily, I already own "Her Radiant Curse," so soon I will travel again to this fantastical world!
