Summary
Sixteen-year-old Sorina has spent most of her life within the smoldering borders of the Gomorrah Festival. Yet even among the many unusual members of the traveling circus-city, Sorina stands apart as the only illusion-worker born in hundreds of years. This rare talent allows her to create illusions that others can see, feel and touch, with personalities all their own. Her creations are her family, and together they make up the cast of the Festivalās Freak Show.
But no matter how lifelike they may seem, her illusions are still just thatāillusions, and not truly real. Or so she always believedā¦until one of them is murdered.
Desperate to protect her family, Sorina must track down the culprit and determine how they killed a person who doesnāt actually exist. Her search for answers leads her to the self-proclaimed gossip-worker Luca, and their investigation sends them through a haze of political turmoil and forbidden romance, and into the most sinister corners of the Festival. But as the killer continues murdering Sorinaās illusions one by one, she must unravel the horrifying truth before all of her loved ones disappear.
My reading experience
Wow! I loved this book! I saw this book appear a lot on social media and I became curious about it, so I decided to buy it. As soon as it arrived, I started reading in it. And it definitely didn't disappoint me!
The world setting in this world was amazing! Gomorrah is such an unique place to explore - it has magic everywhere. I really liked the concept of a traveling festival. There is some politics involved in the book which allows you to discover more about the history of the imaginative world. This history therefore plays an important role in the story.
The story includes action, mystery and a romance. It never got boring and the concept was very intersting. I thought it was freaky and a little bit creepy and I loved it! I also liked the main characters, they were all unique and creative, especially the illusions. Throughout the story I became attached to them, which made it easier to emphatize with the story. Inside the book there are some notes and drawings of the murderer which creates a mysterious vibe. It gaves the book a dark twist and made it extra original.
Daughter of the Burning City is a standalone book and I highly recommend it! The world setting, the characters and the murder mystery concept were amazing. I definitely want to read more books by Amanda Foody. I'm already looking forward to it!
